I think, if you get the birding/wildlife bug..... it's going to cost you some money. A better camera (DSLR) and at least one decent birding lens will set you back a bit.

You're already getting out there where the birds are. To get crisp, detailed photographs, you will most likely need to upgrade your equipment.

I say this because that's what happened to me. I got a very nice photo of a barred owl in our backyard one summer evening, just after sunset. I was hooked. Took me several years to get the equipment that enabled me to be satisfied (for the most part) with the photographs I'm getting. I have a limited budget and don't like to use credit cards so I put aside money every week for camera gear.

Folks here are usually very reluctant to give frank opinions because if they do, sometimes bad things happen. For that reason, it is hard to get feedback on pics. That makes it harder to learn and improve, but that's how it is.

You might want to post one or two shots in the "Critique Corner" part of this forum. You don't have to post them all. Pick the ones you need feedback on. Then listen and learn.

Another from my session with a pair of Marbled Godwits last weekend. I feel fortunate to have been able to see them, and get a couple decent shots as they are rare sighting here on Vancouver Island.

Thank's Matt,.. This little guy is a Downy. He's really quite small its just hard to tell in the pic's. I have never seen him before yesterday, He just showed up and stayed, He's the first one on the feeder this morning. Him and the Rose Breasted. Both are young. I seen the female Downy the other day.. sister I think, from this year

The 2xII extender on the 300/4 keeps amazing me at the moment. I've never used that tc much on previous cameras and until this week never on the 1D4, but it will definitely be in the bag from now on.

I took this shot late in the day. I exposed for the whites and hoped for the best. A Great crested grebe.
