The 2xII extender on the 300/4 keeps amazing me at the moment. I've never used that tc much on previous cameras and until this week never on the 1D4, but it will definitely be in the bag from now on.

I took this shot late in the day. I exposed for the whites and hoped for the best. A Great crested grebe.

Beautiful light and details Ted, super shot. I hope I can find one of these birds to photograph one day. They're here but only the juvis allow themselves to be seen close.

There was an adult posing for all the cameras ( and there were a lot of them) perched over a large crowd of Gators this morning around Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. Along with dozens of herons and egrets of all kinds. What a sight.

Would have liked to be there, thanks for the report Ed. I haven't been there yet but plan too in the spring.

Take your time to look at the quality of the images that others post here. Ask yourself if your images match that quality, in terms of technical quality and in terms of composition. Most of the images you post here lack sharpness. This means either you still do not have a handle on the equipment you are using, or the equipment you are using is insufficient for the task.
From my experience with birds, they know exactly which lens you are using, and tend to stay far enough away to appear as a few pixels on your sensor. Taking bird pictures requires patience and preparation.

Keep working and practicing. Try to upgrade your equipment if necessary, or your understanding if your equipment is sufficient.
