Hi All,

I currently have a Canon 550D + 5D mk1, I shoot quite a bit of sports but I find that my bodies are slow in regards to FPS & sometimes the auto focus.

Any suggestions on what I could get? Considering a 7D, but what do you guys suggest?

I suggest either a 7D Mark II or a used 1 D Mark IV.

Do you have a budget in mind? What lenses do you own? Are you shooting for fun (ex: for your kids) or professionally?

Someone asks me for the best canon sports body I'd say 1DX II, followed by a 1DX, followed by a 5D4. Don't have $3-$6k to burn? No prob, there are lots of cheaper cameras that can get the job done. Crop bodies are nice if you don't have long lenses and are shooting field sports (7D II or 1D4). I don't think there are many outdoor sports where I don't want at least a 300mm FOV (on a full frame). 400mm+ is even better.

7d (mk i's) are very cheap nowadays and a very capable body so it at least seems like a no brainer to sell the 550d and get a 7d and not be out much money at all. If you have a little more to spend, a 1D4 and 7DII are even better. I'd get the 1D4 unless you want to do a lot of video, then the 7d II. If you don't need a crop sensor, a 5D3 has great image quality and focus, but still a tad slow with FPS.

I'd prioritize a 70-200 2.8 lens if you don't have one before I'd spend too much on upgrading a body.

Hi Strouty,

Thanks for getting in touch.

I shoot mostly for my cricket team as a hobby.

Yes, definitely I don't have money to spend on a 1DX II (read a lot of good things about it).

I am considering selling the 550D & going for the 7D mk1. I have the Canon 70-200 F4 but might sell in favour of the 70-200 F2.8. Even for cricket which I shoot quite often, 200mm is still a stretch, I would go for longer focal lengths but the lenses are crazy expensive!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

It's all about budget. What are you willing to spend?

Mostly like nothing above £500.00. I have decided second hand 7D

Heya,

Not sure what used market prices are for you, but, I would entertain the thought of a used 1D Mark III. Around here, they're only a little more than a used 7D1. The 7D has a vastly improved AF system and much faster FPS for action/sports than your current cameras, but not much better image quality, if any, so you're basically just trading in for 8 FPS and an advanced AF system. Personally, I would again suggest that if a used 1D Mark III is an option, to maybe see if you can pinch pennies towards that instead. Get even more speed. And much cleaner files.

Long fast glass is expensive.

Very best,

Well, if you are photographing cricket I would suggest that you get a longer lens, something around 400mm or longer, and then learn to time the shots better.
