If you have Lightroom set to create full size previews on import, it will slow down import but speed up working.

I generate smaller previews on import, then full sized previews after at least a couple of rounds of culling.

Thanks all. I shoot RAW full sized to both cards. Not sure why as I've never had a card go bad on me. Right now, my computer on a clean install of windows 10 has 16 gigs of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. The processor is a AMD quad core running at 4.2GHz as well.

I'm going to upgrade the quad core to an 8 core just to give it a bit more kick. I have the GPU acceleration checked right now but it doesn't do much of anything. I may upgrade my graphics card in the future.

This is not specifically answering your question.

But, for the initial cull and tagging, there is an outstanding piece of software called Photo Mechanic. There is a demo online. It will render the photos pretty much as quick as you can scroll through them. You can get it to work with Lifhtroom from a rating perspective.... It takes some fiddling, but have a look on YouTube and you will find how to do it.

I got into this shooting sport, because Lightroom is pitifully slow for the cull and rate process.

So what I would do is take the Usual million photos of a sporting event.... Import the images to computer... Cull using Photo mechanic and rate them or colour code them. 1 star maybe, 2 stars good 3 stars know I want it. And that's it. It's gold if you have lot of images.

From there the ratings would show up in LR and I could filter the selections and start editing.

It's saved me a ton of time and got images out quickly.

Photo Mechanic is an absolutely 100% essential culling tool.
