Ok, fine. Eclipse from Austin, TX

Setup for this one was a 1D4 + 100-400L Mk I with a 9-stop ND filter:

This one is my sun funnel, which projected the eclipse for my coworkers to view without glasses. This was shot from my Google Pixel:

Not a drop.

At 14.9%, I was pretty plastered by the time I got the shot right.

Curious, did you have a warming gel to cover that beauty dish?

Heya,

Have some freshly baled hay in my field, my daughter wanted to go outside and play, so she got a dress and a little hair work from mom and we ran outside while it was still morning-ish and not overly hot yet (Florida is still cook'n). I'm still using my 10" reflector a lot outside and still really preferring it over wind-sails, it's a lot faster and easier to use with all the distance I gain with its efficiency for output, so I can really place it where I want, out of the way, and just fire. I can get it up high without fear of it coming down (a big modifier would be instant-to-the-ground).

Equipment:

Rovelight 600B in HSS mode
Photosel 10" Reflector (65 degree)
Yongnuo YN622c Transceiver (via pc sync)
Cheetah Boom Stand

Canon 5D Classic
Canon 135mm F2L @ F2
Tamron 90mm F2.8 VC @ F2.8
Yongnuo Yn622C Transceiver

Mom helped a lot.

I didn't use my light meter and I didn't really meter much at all. I shot a little more semi-auto today because the morning sun was rising fast to zenith. So I shot in AV mode, wide open aperture, minimum ISO and I set my metering mode to evaluative and set my EC to -1 & 2/3rds of a stop so that ambient would be underexposed fairly well. I didn't change much from there. My light was set to HSS and I ran it at 1/4th power. I just moved it closer, or pulled it away, to change it's output on subject, so I didn't have to change any values at all. I just moved it back a little if I wanted it lower, or pushed it closer if I wanted the output higher. Very simple. Really enjoy having a no-brainer light setup that I'm not worried that will fall in the wind up high. ETTL would have been nice, but I'll use this light until it breaks at this point before spending on ETTL since I'm still managing without much fuss.

Thanks so much for mentioning you used the YN 622 set up.. I have been looking for a strobe that will fit in with my current YN speedlights and triggers! Any other advice you'd suggest?

The YN622's will work with virtually any strobe as long as the strobe has a pc sync port to plug into (which most do these days). I can't control power or anything with the YN622, I strictly use it to carry the HSS signal to the strobe since it's capable of HSS. When I'm not using HSS, I actually often just use a RF603 transceiver in the same way on this light. It's just a manual light.

I wouldn't get the Rovelight 600B today anymore. The ETTL capable models are not much more expensive (Orlit 610, EXPLOR 600, etc) and can do the same thing but with ETTL which is awesome. I'd go the ETTL route if buying today. It's just super useful for outdoor HSS. Too useful not to get maybe. I only still use this model because I already have it and I'm ok with it, but if buying all over, I would get the newer ones with ETTL & HSS hands down.

Very best,
