Yeah I figured no one did but I do like how that turned out. I loved Petit last year but I don't think I'll make it this year unless I just go for a practice, Maybe night practice I can make it up there. What new gear ya get!?

Petit is a tradition for me...I love it.

New gear, Sony a9...the combination of IBIS, and 20 fps with no blackout is going to be insane at the track...

1/25? Crazy! I can't do much below 1/80, with the slower stuff. For top fuel I really can't go below 1/200 and have a chance. Maybe next year I'll just try it slow and hope I don't throw away 100% of my shots! 1/40 for slower cars and 1/100 for TF. I'll just plan to have zero keepers! But I might get lucky. It's hard to turn fast enough with something going 300mph+ past you, Much less keep the thing in the frame!

A lot of factors to consider...TF and drag cars are a LOT faster. So the distance you cover in the exposure will be very different panning at 1/100 vs the 1/25. Distance to the subject makes a big difference too...the closer you are, the more motion shows up in the image at a faster shutter speed. That 1/25 shot I can get away with, further from the car, shooting at 70mm for a wide view, the car is doing close to 100MPH there, maybe a touch more. And...I am willing to throw away 50 in attempt to get that one...

Same shutter speed, but much closer to the cars...so more motion in the bg...

Another at 1/30...the cars are are full tilt coming down this hill...so more motion as I pan with them...

yeah, I love pans...slow pans...the a9 is gonna be killer...the af is so accurate and fast in what little testing I have done so far...

I could have zoomed in a bit closer on the TF and FC cars, but man it's hard to keep up with them. Only my second year trying at NHRA events. Maybe I'll hit up my local drag strip for some practice panning. I could use it! Another problem I have is if every decal isn't clean, I'm not happy. I realize I may need to slacken my pickyness a touch in that regard as long as most of the car is in focus.

Yes pans are my absolute favorite as well, and to keep adding subject here's a few I like that I didn't edit motion on. Love your pans TRhoads, I clicked on your flickr to view more but do you have a specific area you have just your pans?

having all of the decals and logos clean and sharp...is not good for pans. When I am working with a client that needs that kind of clarity, slow pans are not the way to go. I like the slow pan to show the speed, chaos and dynamics of racing. Straight on side shots can get more of it in focus, but its hard with really slow pans.

I don't have my panning work setup in an album, I do have all my motorsports events grouped in albums, and then grouped into a collection.

It is not even all on Flickr...most of it isn't even on my website anymore, all the client galleries from events I used to shoot...

work down to it...that is something I do when I get back out there after a hiatus...start at 1/100 and work down to the slow stuff...getting the feel for it.

Also, think about how you are setup...I try to have my body rotated such that the point where I want to shoot, I have my chest pointed right at that spot, I am shoulders square to it and as little tension in my torso as possible...coil up in the direction the cars come from, and uncoil as they approach...too much tension in the core, and you can have that affect your shot by camera shake...doesn't always work...but its a good thing to pay attention to.

Here's one from last years Nationals at 1/80. Not entirely happy with it. But looks like if I'd have stuck with that speed, I might have gotten some good ones eventually.

Here's a few from the last few years. Not brave enough to go much slower on the shutter as these were either 300 or 400mm hand held.

We had to have been standing pretty close to each other. I think I have the same shots :)
