^^^Seconded in whole!

It's a shame that Canon jacked up the price on it so much (though I guess that the 18-135 USM is its spiritual successor)...

I have the 18-135 STM - it came in a 70D kit - but I have stuck with the 15-85 because I feel the IQ is better and I like that extra 3mm at the low end. It's my most-used lens by far.

Fully agreed, the 15-85 is much more practical overall, and it is my most used lens as well, as least on crop (overall it has been overtaken by the Sigma 24-105A, the most awesome lens I've ever owned, just not for travel haha).

It is the 15mm that is the key for me. It makes the equivalent FOV of a 24-136mm on FF. All of the 18-x mm EF-S lenses are 29-x mm FF equivalent, and who wants to restrict their FF lenses to 29mm at the wide end!? Until I got this lens I would spend a lot of time changing to a 10-22 EF-S just to get that wide shot that my 18-135mm was too tight for. The IQ is amazing even wide open, and unless anything has changed in the last few years, it's the only EF-S lens that accrues CPS points – of benefit to some of us and also an indication that Canon thinks it’s a damn good lens too.
As for price, you can pick up a good second-hand copy for around £300. A new copy is currently £30 cheaper than I paid 5 years ago, so I don't know where the alleged price hike comes in? Currency variations in the UK have made every lens more expensive compared to 1 year ago agreed, but that's not unique to this lens or only Canon.
