I want to add a few from Hong Kong taken over last Christmas break.
The first two were taken in Hong Kong park.
The next two were taken near a tree favored by the butterflies outside the guesthouse in University of Hong Kong.
The last one was taken on a hike in Tai Po Kau.
They're all wild.
All taken with a Canon 7D, 300mm focal length. More exif data and ID (if known) are given with the photos.

Species unknown. 1/250s, f/9, iso 1000, a little flash was used.

Pea blue (male) (Lampides boeticus). 1/1000s, f/9, iso 400. Natural light.

Painted jezebel (Delias pasithoe). 1/500s, f/10, iso 1000. Natural light.

Bengal striped blue crow (Euploea mulciber mulciber). 1/1000s, f/7.1, iso 2000. Natural light. I didn't have time to readjust the camera setting.

Banded tree brown (Lethe confusa). 1/640s, f/6.3, iso 2000. Natural light. Butterfly was very shy so I avoided the flash.

All good tips, main thing is get them when they are busy!

Naughty time busy

As said if they spook they will tend to come back if you stay still.

Feeding BFs time at a flower depends on the floret density and how often the flower has been visited. Single floret flowers, they may feed for seconds, densely packed floret heads they may stick around for minuets.

For lenses I suspect anything can work, I tend to find the extra reach of the 180 macro helps unless it is the sort that is low in the grass then the shorter 100mm is better.

My first time out this year butterflying i only was a few. Here is my best shot of a Western Pine Elfin.
F/8 and around 1:PM.

I was thinking of printing this one. Does it look to noisy in the greens, too saturated or over sharpened? It was very sharp to begin with. I just did a few LR edits. I wish i was at F/11 for a little more DOF, but it is still acceptable. I see i still need to fix that brown spot on the needle just behind the butterfly. How is the composition, i did crop quite a bit as well as this is a small butterfly.

It looks OK to me, but I might move the Bfly a bit more to the right. As for sharpening, why sharpen noise if you don't have to? There are several ways to sharpen, but generally, I only sharpen the part of the image that will benefit the most, & that also results in a smaller file size at the same Quality setting. You should be able to do something similar in LR.

Looks OK to me, don't worry.

I have noticed dark very deep greens can look noisy in some of my shots, don't know if this is a Canon thing. Having said that I very rarely do NR.

I do think we obsess too much about low noise and super sharpness. Even my most crap shot on a DSLR is better technically than my old Kodachrome 64 slides.

Image content, composition and lighting "should" be more important than technical perfection. I guess both is always nice. :)

Here is a Pacific Fritillary that i got last week. I had about 2 min to work with him and had a bit too shallow DOF for the above wing.
This is my first find in my area as i am on the outskirts of its location.
The pink on it's under wing is what makes it the Pacific variation.
