Here is the pod extended without raising the center column. From top of the ball head to the feet measures 56 inches.

Thanks Tada for taking the time to review this tripod. This is a good quality carbon fiber tripod for under $200 ( Bestbuy).
I'm using the pan and tilt that came with it and have had no problems with my 70-200mm 2.8 IS mounted on a 5D.
Its very stable and weighs only 3.9lbs. I visited my local brick and mortar photo store and compared all the tripods available and this came out on top for price and quality.

I just bought one of these at my local BB. It's less than half the weight of my Manfrotto 055XB with the 322RC pistol grip ball head. I have a Parkinson's-like condition and it has reduced my muscle strength and balance, so the Manfrotto combo became just too heavy and awkward for me to handle and carry. What I sold the Manfrotto for and purchased the Velborn unit for was "a wash" so I feel I came out ahead. I again have a stable, usable tripod, light enough to carry, in spite of my physical disability.

I just ordered one from the local BB as well, looking for a light weight, lower cost alternative to the more expensive tripods out there. Will probably get an aftermarket head and some L brackets for my bodies, but I'll post up an opinion on it once it arrives as well. :)

I really liked my 530a when I had it. I only switched because I wanted something smaller when folded up so I went with the Feisol. But the Velbon was a very good tripod for hte price.

just a little refresh here. I just picked this tripod up at my local best buy for 69.99. it's on clearance. floor model at mine, so it's the last one. reg $199.99. clearance price $99.99but they didn't have carry case or stone bag. got 10% off for floor model, then i got an extra ten for missing parts but talked em into extra 20. told them the bags gotta be 20 bucks alone. THEN, as he was swiping my check the guy came back and found the bag and stone bag and just gave em to me. This to me seems like a very decent tripod even at the 100 dollar clearance price tag. I see B&H have them out of stock for 284!

I've been very pleased with mine, lightweight and stable and easy to carry around. Best tripod I've ever used. I only wish that it had taller legs so I wouldn't have to raise the center column and lose stability in the wind. Very much recommended for the price!

Just like broto, I also found the velbon 530 at my local BB fpr about $75 (Floor model as well), including the PH-250b head, it has worked great the very few times I have used it.

Hi! Since your orig post is from 2008 I was hoping you upgraded your tripod and have no further use for your velbon 530. If that is the case and you wish to sell it I'm interested. I have had mine for years and it's great for my needs. Recently while on an expedition I lost the center post (Long tube) and couldn't retrieve it. Since no one sells this tripod anymore I'm looking for a replacement. If interested please drop me an email. zizzophoto@gmail.com

Thanks.
