I tend to agree....the Harrier is kind of like the A-10 Thunderbolt with both having a bit of old fashioned character.

How do you guys avoid/remove the heat waves?
I would guess the closer you are, the less an impact they have on the shot? Well walking around on the tarmac is frowned upon.

The one thing that really won't help is buying better quality glass! The better the quality of the lens, the easier it is to see the mirage effects.

As far as access goes, if you have a small local airfield with a flying club get yourself along and introduce yourself. In general pilots are friendly types, and are usually quite willing to chat about aircraft in the clubhouse. It's surprising the amount of access you can end up getting if you take the time to make friends with them.
