I've heard some people complain about the DR on the a9. I don't think it has any issues whatsoever. It won't match the a7RII, but blows my 5DIII out of the water.

my guess, is the only people complaining about it, are people used to the DR of the A7R2! Shooting with both, and editing the files of both, I do see a difference, but both are still miles beyond where the Canon files can go...

The a7rII definitely has more DR...1 stop in real world shooting.

That said, the difference only comes into play in really extreme cases. 4 stop push or 3 stop push with +100 on the shadow slider. There are times when the lighting in the scene calls for pushing a file that hard, but in most cases it flattens the contrast to much and it starts to look like an over-zealous HDR. The a9's DR is more than adequate for most shots.

For those of you with the Sony a9, SAR reports there is a new firmware release for the FE70-200GM and 100-400GM that improves AF with the a9.

You can read about it and find links to the firmware here:

this is a very heavy crop from the a9...but I forgot to adjust my export settings and it exported out to the same settings that I had been using on images from the A7R2, 6000 on the long side...and there is no IQ loss at all from the original crop...blows my mind. That tells me I can print really big from this body too...this could not have been more than 1/3 of the original frame...love this camera more and more everytime I use it.

Looks like the a9 needs to go in for repair. Been having some weird LCD issues with it. Got to wait until I have a slow down though.

It's got a kind of "jelly" look on the left 1/4th of the LCD when I touch it. Weird thing is it happens worse when I touch off of the actual screen. I will tap the left edge of the screen (not where there are pixels) and it makes this weird ocean waves receding type look. And the same area where it has those issues it's noticeably brighter in a bright image, such as a blue sky. The right side of the screen also has these issues, but in a much smaller area that is less noticeable. The whole issue is not very noticeable, but I've noticed the issue for awhile and I need to get it fixed under warranty. I actually had forgotten about it until another issue came up. At long shutter speed settings (.8" or longer) in a dark room or with the lens cap on, there are two spots that flicker white on the LCD. I just noticed this the other day, which reminded me to get in touch with support about the "jelly screen".

Have you signed up for pro services? They'll overnight a loaner to you for free with the repair.

No. My lack of a second FF body prevents me from doing that because they have stupid rules. I have their most expensive camera ever, a $1500 crop, a P&S that costs almost the same as a Canon 6D, two GM lenses, two Zeiss lenses, and a 10-18 that's not cheap, but I don't meet the requirements.

I guess maybe I could still apply and see if they would let me in. I meet all the other requirements with flying colors and have their most high end crop camera.

I've been told they will bend rules to get pros under their umbrella. Worth a call!!

Well that is technically a full frame camera. That's their rules. 2 FF cameras, 3 GM/G or Zeiss lenses, and be a full time photographer.

Yeah...some people got accepted with aps-c bodies too. I honestly think portfolio is the biggest consideration.

It worth a shot!
