I must have a different Astro workflow than most as I don’t even use the distance scale, I zoom to full magnification and focus on a bright star. I had assumed everyone done it that way but reading this has made me realise it’s not the case :-)

wow really awesome. i need to go to that point where you shoot next time. i went their with family and friends. too busy i didn't get to see any of you guys in Socal. Also Nadim in Orange county.

Requires a bit of hiking early early morning, when it's still pitch black, need some lights to be safe or you can fall off the mountain :-P

Surprising amount of foot traffic, even at that time, so you feel pretty safe. Once you get there, you're treated with sweeping views.

you'll have to excuse the SOOC images, but for illustration sake, right of the observatory and left of the observatory

Went out this morning for some vanilla landscapes, woke up late, so had to test my cardio I've been doing these months. I had to run up the mountain full speed for as long as I could with all my gear. I was cutting it super close, only 10-15 minutes of shooting and the sky started to wash out in this direction.

Yes that was really bothering me too so I just checked something and it's good news I think. I switched the lens to MF. Now I see a focal distance scale in the viewfinder. Also even better news is that if I power off and then on the camera, the lens keeps the last focus distance you set. So I think this is really good news. What do you think?

well, that is good news...dang you! a focus scale in the viewfinder is a great idea...does it do that in live view on the rear LCD as well?

with the b18, no, I set it to the point where the inifinity symbol just comes on, based on testing with SharpStar. I know that the stars will be in perfect focus at that point. So being able to read the OLED on the B18 is key, tough if the tripod is up high...and if the camera shuts off...it resumes AF...I have learned to turn the camera to MF when shooting astro.

ahh forgot about that, I was the same with my limited use of the B18 for Astro. With my samyang 24 I use the other method though

indeed, I'm very happy with the shot. Sure it could be better, but it takes a lot of effort and a bit of luck. I just wanted to get a shot here before the time change, which means I'de have to wake up an hour earlier to replicate this shot. Next on my agenda is a dramatic sunset by the tidepools or vincent thomas bridge sunrise. Kenneth Hahn sunset also in the agenda, but maybe december after some snow hits the mountains.

I have the same complaint. My Sony FE 100-400mm GM arrived to me from Adorama inadequately packed. Happily the lens was undamaged in transit and arrived in perfect working order.

Can you please email me: Helen@adorama.com w/your order # so we can follow up with the individual packer concerned.

Thank you

Hi Helen, I will email you my last two orders. Sorry for the delay. Here is a sample of the packaging. See how the bubble wrap is only on the bottom.

I will check in a bit.

I believe all lenses do this when MF is chosen on the camera menu (focus scale on the screen). I don’t have my camera in front of me to check though

My last two shipments from BH were packed the same way with thin cardboard boxes and just one layer of bubble wrap.

I'm guessing they and Adorama may be using some sort of automated packing robot?

You could be right Eddie. However, I don’t believe all of them retain the last focal length setting after powering down the camera. I could be wrong though.

From a recent trip ( couple of weeks ago ) to central Portugal. I've always wanted to visit this place but it's really remote with no easy access to the location which makes it really difficult to get there during the hot mediterranean summer. The village is called Drave and it's completely abandoned. Love to visit it in the Spring when the brooms are all in flower and the stream that runs down the mountain is flowing.
