At our first meeting, we were getting acquainted at a small outside cafe having coffee and discussing the day's shoot when I pulled out the camera and made this candid, natural light portrait.

Thanks for posting these. Excellent use of large aperture! I've always (well, almost) wanted to upgrade my 85 1.8 to the 1.2L II, but abhor the f/1.2 look for H&S shots, which I do a lot of. Eyes in focus and ears/hair OOF does not appeal to me. Neither does the CA of the 1.8. This (to me) is effective, attractive use of 85mm f/1.2 DOF. Now I just need a pile of money! :)

You can always stop it down to f/1.8 to correct the effects you don't like. Another compromise is the Sigma 85mm f/1.4. Frankly I've gotten some of my best and some of my worst shots with this lens...

The non Art version is available for $850, if I was trying to save money that's what I'd go for but if you have another $1k to spend then go for the Canon. It's a luxury item, I'd also consider the Art version for $1,100 because you can still get another really good lens for the $700 you have left over...

Still prefer the look the 1.2 gives me over anything I've seen so far from the new 1.4 IS. But that may change as more images from the new lens are posted.

Take a look at this review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixM4C0Hwewk (external link)

I did a screen capture of the two when they were comparing bokeh near the end of the video. In Photoshop, I laid one over the other so I could toggle them and see the difference. There is a definitely a difference but I would have a hard time noticing any difference if I didn't see them together. If you really know the 85 f/1.2, it might be obvious to you. Either way, it's a pretty good comparison.

Yep, I saw that earlier. True, in that video, snapshots taken with both lens have similarities. But I've yet to see a decent portrait with good skin tones and textures from the new lens.

It may be fantastic, but I haven't seen real proof yet.
