I bought this lens about 6 months ago, and I've really never used it. I have a 16-35 F/4, and I've always used it for the 35mm length. Last week I spent a few hours looking at "sharpness" ratings on DXOmark and MTF charts between the 16-35 F/4 and the 35 F/2 IS. I was quite impressed at how much better the 35 F/2 is at F/8. I shoot primarily landscape, so I'm usually at F/8 to F/11.

Because of my new found knowledge, I'm going to shoot a lot more landscape on my 35 F/2. From my few hours of MTF comparisons, it may be the best MTF performer, EF mount, at F/8 than any other lens I looked at, including Sigma, Tamron, and Zeiss.

it’s also insanely sharp at f2 in the center. Colors and contrast may not be as good as the L lens though (sharpness is not everything)

Doesn't MTF measure contrast? Perhaps not colors, but I thought contrast and resolution were the primary reason for MTF charts.

This was also my experience with the 35 IS - I was amazed by how sharp the my images were with the lens and how it resolved detail, even next to heavyweights like the Sigma 35 Art.

In the end, I opted for the older 35L for the way it renders images overall (lens character, is it?). The photos I've shot with the 35L definitely aren't as sharp as similar ones I've taken with the 35 IS, though, and I do sometimes miss its lighter weight, and smaller profile.

I really enjoy this lens. I’m still having a hard time deciding between this and my 17-55 f2.8. I keep both in my bag but always finding myself grabbing for the 35

Attached to the 12II extension tube. Though it looks like they're sitting, they're actually hanging on a thorn which made it extremely difficult to keep her ring centered holding the branch in one hand while supporting the camera and shooting with the other.
