Whatever it is, bee or hover fly, the photo is really awesome.

Those Australian hoverflies look exactly like bumblebees!

Just so happens that I came across the largest that I've ever seen in central Georgia, USA. Wide as a blade of grass.

Insects in Tasmania (bumblebee was illegally released 25 years ago - not present on mainland Australia).

I didn't know this. It made me actually identify the "bumble bee" that I have photographed in my back yard in Brisbane. I now know that I have resident (or regularly visiting) blue banded bees and teddy bear bees.

Thanks!

Cheers, Damien

What you have is a hoverfly. But what Armidillo had was a bumblebee.

Well Archibald, I did post 3 photos! One bumble bee, one honey bee, one hover fly.

GAjoe's hover fly looks unnervingly like a wasp (in it's coloration at least...)

Ah, I see...

Quite a few flies are wasp mimics.

Wish I had another angle that shows the last segment to be very flat and not round at all. This one was so much larger than any I have seen in the past. Here's the size that I'm used to seeing

How did the DsR preform for sports? Do you always use that body? I am going to add this lens to my collection as I think it will be a perfect compliment to what I already own.

It doesn't matter what you have Carol... this lens is a must have for a Canon shooter
