The FE 90 is a macro lens. AF is not really its forte. It's very slow to focus, even when it does focus. It's really meant to be focused manually more than anything else, for up-close macro photography.

I have both the FE 90 and the FE 85/1.8. The FE 85 is definitely the one to go for if you're looking for good AF and general purpose shooting (portraits, etc).
It doesn't have a very good MFD, so it cannot be used for macro work. As long as you're not into macro, I'd sell the FE 90 and get an FE 85/1.8.

I get that but the FE 90 won’t lock focus with anything at any distance if the light is low. During daylight and outside it’s acrually quite quick. I bought the 90 specifically for newborn photos of my baby and to get into product type shots but had hoped I could could also utilise the af at times.

they fly through to LAX and line up from far far out east. I dont know how many miles out, but I suspect many. I dont know how far N/S relative to the moon, so it may depend on time of year. I'm south of LAX just a bit, and time of year is now for me. Months prior, the moon would rise too far south that I'de have to go north for the alignment.

if you can see the LAX bound planes, that greatly increases your chances since they land every 5 minutes or so. There was enough time for me to capture 2 planes flying through the moon, however if you sat directly underneath the path, you can probably get a LOT more shots in.

Here's where I live in relation to LAX Charlie. I'm 80 miles east and 14 miles south of that point.

Thanks Robert. You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I’ve headed out to try and see it and seen nothing. I’m hoping for a clear sky tonight and a repeat

Thanks guys, I hope that’s not my once in a lifetime experience of it but if it is I’m happy I saw it and happy with the image. I would shoot a slightly lower iso next time though and compensate with a longer shutter speed as had to put a bit of noise reduction on this one. Couldn’t do my usual SR app trick to get clean high iso night shots as the definition in the Aurora was lost with the app

Amazing shot, I keep seeing reports of flares but unfortunately I’m too far south to see them most of the time, shame it didn’t happen a couple of weeks ago when I was up near Aberdeen.

Hey Gene, I think you're in the money. Based on the moon rising north of that line, it's simply a matter of timing.

If you can see planes in your area, it can work. The advantage of the moon overhead is that you can kind of chase the moon if you have an open field. You have many more opportunities, on top of that, you get to shoot a peak moon brightness = low iso.

downside is that the moon will rise at 9:30p today and even less volume than yesterday, so optimum shooting time might not happen till 3-4 hours after the moon rises. Another downside is that after 10pm, I think the volume at LAX dies down, so you may not get a plane every 5 minutes. it may be 10-15 instead, which reduces your chances dramatically.

so basically, set your calendar to November 28, the new window of opportunity for you (get an app for sunrise/sunset/moonrise/moonset, it's real handy). It doesnt have to be night time either, a daytime moon shot would work great I imagine.
