Part of a lighting kit? For example, the end of a rib on an umbrella.

Lighting yes, "kit" ok, umbrella no

your first guess was so close I thought you were intentionally getting it not-quite right.... to let someone else pick it up. Hence the ;-)a;-)a

OK ... so that leads me in two directions. Firstly, it absorbs light and secondly that it is not a light sensor but some other radiation sensor such as IR.

Actually, it looks very like a thermopile, but that is so geekish I do not believe it.

I could do you a 5V thermopile
or a thermocouple sliced though
or a passive or active infrared or ultrasonic transducer
But I'd incur the wrath of the almighty.

this is as above, photographic, lighting... , and the red bit.
I think it's fair to say you got it

Just to keep abreast of the previous one, it's a fibre optic connection to a twin macro light, but it's where the light goes IN, not where it comes OUT as Ed's first guess said.

Is the above a painted, pot representation of part of a human.

Firstly, this image is definitely not X-rated.

And no.

Ummmmmmm. I have actually seen this item in a museum. Whether it was an art museum I do not recall. However, it would better to answer "no" to avoid misleading you.

Is it an artifact made before 1000 A.D. or a copy of one?
