I'm trying to get out more. I need the practice. Full manual with ettl flash. My daughter won't sit still long enough to dial in the flash manually :)

I can relate. I have a 6 year old son and a 3 year old daughter lol.

I bought a cheap lightmeter off eBay, Polaris SPD1000 (or something). Great for when you need to get your settings right before you sit them down.

That's also a monster of a light stand to tote around. I made a small compact setup.

Phottix double folding umbrella 33"
Phottix compact light stand P200 Mark II

toss those plus your flash and flash mount in a small case and hang it on your shoulder.

OR, or when I need to "run and gun".

I converted a monopod with a flash mount, that and the 33" umbrella. I hold the monopod in my left hand, extended, and my camera in my right hand.

The lightmeter is a good idea, just not sure if I'd use it enough to justify the cost.

I have a smaller lightstand, and I've used a monopod as you describe. The beauty of a heavier light stand is the weight ... it'll sit still if it's a little breezy outside. We were only about 100 yards from the car so it wasn't too bad of a haul.

I wouldn’t spend a few hundred on a lightmeter. I got mine off eBay and it was around $100. I don’t use mine much now, but it was great when the kids were real antsy. My 6 year old son is used to me photographing him now, but our 3 year old we just adopted is still a bit rambunctious so it comes in handy lol.

lol, this image didn't work at all, but I went thru the trouble of taking it, so here you go. My daughter needed to have her hair up, and she needed to be wearing all black. In the Minecraft video game, creepers are in the woods and they creep up on you when you least expect it ... they blow up ... you die.

No ... it didn't work out. But you're really lucky (or you've done really well) to have a daughter who is happy to humour your strange ideas and come out and support you in your photography.

Three little girls. Oh the nightmare. Three little girls. Cousins. Matching outfits no less. Three little girls. Plus all their moms.

I took two setups this time, to break in one, while primarily leaning on my comfort zone. I added Fuji the to the mix. Everything at 35mm FOV. We picked a yard with some lovely oaks and greenery that is still colorful, despite the fall here in Florida mostly showing dead plants, lots of browns, there are some things that still retain a little vibrance. We shot late in the evening to get some warmer temperature light, a little cooler weather to handle all the blood, sweat & tears, and to get some sunlight from a favorable position for their hair as I'm only fooling with one light as it is, regardless of a tribe of little girls running around. I normally don't use much by way of props, but I find having little things around help immensely with attention-control, so I had the moms bring miniature squash/pumpkins and other fall type things, along with a little something to sit on. I just find having that stuff helps with attention span and keeps them on target. The girls are 7, 4 and 3 years of age and absolutely bonkers. Probably killed a solid 2 hours just trying to keep them all together. Put them together and hug, they ring around the rosie and hit the ground. Lots of pushing, yelling, grabbing... phew, sigh.

I generally go wide angle for most group sessions. I mostly just like 35mm and fast. For play and stuff, I brought the 135L, but that was for natural light running around so I didn't have to chase them (those are not shared for this purpose in the lighting forum). I wanted to try my new Fuji out along with my Canon. Both are 35mm FOV and F2. For lighting, I brought my manual strobe, but I didn't have to go into HSS, so I was able to shoot in manual and normal sync speeds as the ambient light wasn't too bright (other than direct sun which I kept). I shot at as low of an ISO as I could (sometimes 50, sometimes 100, sometimes 200) and that's about it, at F2~F2.8 depending on the stack and DOF needs. I like soft backgrounds, but not so soft that you cannot recognize anything, and I find fast 35's do that nicely while letting me shoot within 4~5 feet of groups, and within touch range of singles. My modifier this time is a Softlighter II 60" umbrella with its diffuser sock on a Cheetah boom stand. Risky setup. I have recently been using metal reflectors more, due to wind. But since I had several parents around, I risked the wind and had one just hold the modifier up in case a gust occurred. Happy to report, never went down, no gusts, and was able to shoot the 60" at close range. For ambient, I generally drop it by a good -1 stop, sometimes, in the sun. I know I can always pull up shadows later in post a little via RAW. I was often at 1/200s, F2~2.8, and ISO 50~200 as a range. I metered my light at around 5 feet from the subjects (being a 60" modifier) to get around key level light. I like key with direct opposing sun. Or at least high levels of fill so that it's close to keep a contrast. I used a light meter to get there quickly, so no playing around, no chimping.

This was my first experience with a Leaf Shutter based camera (Fuji X100S) and I have to say, it really is a pleasure to not worry with shutter speed effecting strobe output in "high speed sync" scenarios. The leaf shutter syncs up to 1/1000s wide open at F2, so I had a lot of play room (and has a 3 stop ND filter if I need to drop more light). Being able to shoot AV and it not effect strobe output was great. I was able to just set aperture for DOF, ISO base (200 in this case) and the leaf shutter did the rest and I was able to meter the light based on aperture & ISO, regardless of it being faster than normal sync speeds without any special stuff. And no special triggers. Very nice! My 5D system of course needed transmitters and I used YN622's just in case I had to go HSS, but I was able to shoot all manual without HSS at normal sync speeds today in this light.

Light: Flashpoint Rovelight 600B with Yongnuo YN622 transceiver via PC Sync cable
(Cool point: the stock transmitter for the Rovelight functions even if the YN622 is plugged in and on, so I retain ability to remotely control power, and trigger from both systems at the same time)
Modifier: Photek Softlighter II 60" with diffuser panel on
(Wind sail! Luckily no gusts, and I had someone holding it at all times)
Stand: Cheetah Boom Stand + weight
Props: Always take stuff for the kids to play with to keep attention and placement, I used squash/mini-pumpkins this time.

I had an ETTL&HSS speedlite as backup in case things got bad in the wind. Also a 10" reflector in case I needed to lose the big modifier. Didn't need either thankfully.

Shooting into the sun or at least with sun coming through canopy onto hair to give me a rim and some back lighting. Also keeps squinty eyes out of the light.

Keeping three young girls in the same place, doing what you want? Near impossible. Especially with each mom shouting something. Mini-pumpkins save the day though.

To get their attention and keep them sort of all looking up or towards an area (this is near impossible), I would have one of the parents at a time take turns calling to the girls or doing something silly behind me. They even used their cellphone to show a video sometimes just to get them to look up. They would literally get in the zone, playing, fighting each other (the three little girls) that you would never see their face. Gotta have plan A, B and C. I basically issued commands verbally to the moms, they did the work (I was laying on the ground for the perspective so I wasn't getting up and down over and over).

Great set, Martin.

An observation ... it looks like the light is falling off very quickly from top to bottom. My un-calibrated and slightly dark monitor here at work isn't showing much if any detail in their black pants. Also, I'm surprised that the background isn't more out of focus shooting full frame at f/2. I would have expected that dappled sunlight to be a little more surreal looking ... not your fault, of course.

Sure, it's f2 but he is using wide angle lenses. The dof is much wider so you physically can't produce as much bokeh compared with a longer focal length at the same aperture.
