Here is what I do...

Shoot the ice before it is cleaned and use that to set a custom WB. I try to avoid shooting through the glass.

Shoot raw, AI Servo, Center point with Back Button focus. f/2.8, SS of 1/800 and lately Auto ISO with a cap of 6400 depending upon how well lit the arena is and which body I'm using.

I'm strictly an amateur but I'm sure others will chime in.

Also, for College hockey a higher SS may be needed.

im in a poorly lit (fair quantity, poor quality) municipal arena so take it with a grain of salt:

RAW always...

AI Servo on the focus, Manual on the selector switch, low continuous (you may need high continuous, my team is the lowest semi-pro you can get and the guys are older and slower)...

Center point focus with Back Button Focus. ill shift the focus point up to the top of the points so i can focus on faces and have the camera aimed down a bit to keep the feet/stick/puck in the frame...

generally
3200 or better ISO
1/640 - 1/1000 shutter speed
f2.8 - 3.2 aperture

5D3 and the 70-200 f2.8 L mkI

i shoot over the glass on the red line but the rink is pre-1968 expansion size of only 185x85, not the current 200x85 or olympic 200x100 so i get pretty good coverage with this lens. i sometimes will shoot from the upper level (really only have "upper" or along the glass) with a 1.4x on the lens which of course drops me to f4 (effective 280mm) so ill come down to 1/500 or 1/640, but i have better camera support sitting than standing on a ladder so it pretty much cancels out...

good luck and waiting to see some results

Nice images. Looks like the shooter just missed his target in the second one. Seems to be a lot of room through the 5 hole.

The high school season has begun in Minnesota. Here's a couple from Woodbury vs Mankato East. Through the glass with a D4 and 70-200 VRII

Nice shots. Must be a bright building to get 1/1000 at f/5.6!

It's the brightest rink I shoot in, but not as bright as it appears. I was playing around with a Nikon 200-500/5.6 for the heck of it. The majority of the shots were at ISO 8k, and that left me a stop or so underexposed. Sensors are so good now days there's no real noise penalty for underexposure. Most of the time I shoot in there at 1000/2.8/3200.

Hill-Murray and Burnsville opened their Minnesota seasons with an entertaining 3-2 Hill win this week. Hill-Murray is a consistent power in high school hockey, a private school that recruits players from other districts. Their opponents are always up for them and the games are always tough and entertaining, with lots of hitting and play making. Plus, Burnsville has the cleanest glass in the state!

some more Federal Hockey League action between the Port Huron Prowlers and the Carolina Thunderbirds...

Carolina was highly taunted as a difficult team but Port Huron scored a pair within 27 seconds of each other, only a minute and half into the game before giving up a pair and then netting their third in the 1st period...

the Carolina goalie was chased after giving up 5, which was followed by THIS goalie giving up 5 tallies himself...

this was goal #10
