Nice work dude... terrain where I live doesn't really lend itself for shots like that... very jealous :)

Huh... I did not even know it was a "supermoon". lol

Shot with Sony A99ii + Minolta 400/4.5 + 2X TC. Only fair seeing conditions, 87% humidity, angle at 37 degrees. Later, when it was higher, we were fogged in. 99.5% illumination.

This is a stack of 11 images. (Best 11 of 47) Processed in PIPP, Autostakkert!2, Astra Image, and LR6. (Yeah.. I like messing with moon shots!) Is it better than a single image? Yes. Is it worth all the extra work? Probably not.

The sky was hazy when I took this 'supermoon' shot on Saturday, Dec 2nd. It was also too high in the sky to get anything in the foreground for added interest. You can see the glow from the haze though.

Not much contrast due to full moon light but...

In this case Stacking was of little benefit given all the work.

A99ii + Minolta 400/4.5 + 2X TC

Just a single image.

Not super moon and not my best - cant wait to try it on my tripod, this one was hand held without any IS/VR.
Oh and AF instead of LV manual.

Well... I picked up another A77ii. Man, I have missed this camera for my moon shooting. ;)

92% humidity..... way too much turbulence for stacking. But I am pretty darn happy with this single exposure. :)

I don't know much about about stacking, so I'm asking this because I might learn something, not out of smart-assery. I very rarely stack, and when I do it's only a couple of images done manually for macro work due to the extremely thin DOF; at the distance we shoot the moon from, it seems to me the DOF is sufficient to get the whole thing in focus, so why stack... is it for noise reduction, or perhaps more of an HDR effect... pulling details out of shadows and highlights?

Thanks.

I'm sure there are experts out there that can give you a better answer than I can but I think partly, stacking helps overcome atmospheric distortion. This very short video I made recently in 4k shows how the moon shimmers due to heat distortion.
