I generally don’t use a boom outdoors. Just more thing to swing in the wind. An inch beyond center’s not gonna hurt a pic much. But then I don’t shoot many shots directly under a light outdoors.

I have that very one (10"). It handles the wind well and I put it well up there, 10~12 feet up. I wouldn't do it in a storm. But for general wind and general gusts it does it fine.

Very best,

Very cool. Seems to work well. The only think I would question (which could just be personal shooting style) is the harshness or spotlight of the light. Rather the light being more broad and distibuted through out, it's more of a spotlight effect. Unless of course it's because your shooting mid day, with a high shutter and under exposing ur ambient a bit.

Maybe a beauty dish would be better suited for my shooting style.

Thank you wise

It is IMHO.

Before HSS days using Einsteins with Kacey's dish. I need to replace the mount. Or buy Bowen's disk. Used Elinchrom 16-17" maxlite or whatever it is called at work, no where as good as Kacey. Now a days no Kacey anymore. Molas are good but expensive. Lot of junk beauty dishes out there also.

Yeap, mid-day and late day Florida, underexposing ambient. Exactly what I'm doing.

Very best,

Crazy. I never see beauty dishes used when I'm around other photographers. I always envisioned them as being more used for that purpose "beauty" which their name implies. More for modeling, portraits, etc. I generally shoot my 3 kids or all of us as a family more than anything. So I typically just use my 43' octa which works well and spreads nice soft light. However, wind usual can be a problem and I need to think about other solutions.

I've added a 28" beauty dish to my kit. It definitely takes wind better than my larger 47" & 48" Octas do. And my 60" is of course a total boat sail. The beauty dish is small, metal, with no catch points so wind rolls nicely off it compared to some of my other modifiers that seem to catch wind more due to shape. The heavier 28" beauty dish seems to take the wind nicely and a sock can be used with it making it softer (at close proximity). They're inexpensive so its worth trying out too. They also generally have a wide spread.

Very best,
