I recommend 16-35 f4 IS - it's an amazing lens plus ultra wide for portraits is fun!

I started with 135L & 200L II primes. I thought a zoom would be more convenient, so I sold them and bought a 70-200 2.8. Massive beast. That didn't last long before I downsized it to an f/4. Then I missed the aperture of the primes. So I repurchased both the 135L and 200L II.

I had a 24-70 2.8... for about a week. That was the about the fastest lens I ever flipped. It took me about an hour to realize it was a compromise on both fronts. Not as fast as even my consumer primes, and a tiny zoom range, comparatively. Big and heavy on top of that.

I imagine I'll eventually get tired of carrying heavy zoom lenses but I'm not quite there yet. I do agree with the range of the 24-70. When I was shooting a crop camera, I started with the 15-85 and had good success with it, even though others hated it. I bought a 17-55 f/2.8 for the speed and used it around the house a few times with our new kitten but the range really bugged me. I ended up using my 100L macro much more.

Anyway, lots of people love their fast primes. I don't have any yet. I have fast cameras though. ;)

Edit: I forgot... I do have a semi fast prime, the 50 f/1.8 STM... shows you how much I use it.

I think 11-24 would be mint. That way the lens would be as far reaching as the question.

The EF 15mm 2.8 FE lens can be a fun lens for weddings, receptions, seniors, and family gatherings. Just don't over use it. A little goes along way. ...showthread.php?p=15259192

The EF 16-35 4.0L IS lens is one that I am trying to use more for portraits. I've had some bad luck in the past when using my 16-35 2.8L II so I have been gun shy with wide angle lens when shooting people. ...showthread.php?p=18253508

70-200 f2.8 II IS USM.

I sold my 100L and replaced it with this. Couldn't be happier, if there's an IQ difference between the prime and the zoom, I don't see it.

Takes a bit more grunt to carry it around, though - do arm curls. :p
