New camera recommendation for the wife

I think you should go camera shopping with your wife. Let her decide if she likes the feel of the ergonomics.

I prefer my smaller body 80D over my smaller Fuji X-t2 as far as body grip and comfort. With my experience owning and using a 5d and 40D the newer 80D is a serious performer. The 5D is magical but iso 3200 your pushing it! The 80D is quite light and feels alot smaller than a 40D.

The M series may work for you guys as the native glass might fit your needs and you can always use an adapter for your current Canon glass you have.

The overall big picture I chose Fuji over Canon M series because of the fuji native glass selection. As a Canon shooter I still feel the newer M series will be more responsive in AF over the Fuji system. I do like the Fuji image quality as producing nice files seems "easy" while using a Fuji system. I like fuji for the glass selection and fuji render image quality but auto focus isn't completely on par with other systems out there.

Spending a tad more the Fuji X-t20 would do a good job in 1080/4k video, landscape and family documentation. Buy a kit with the very capable pro build kit lens 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 stabilized lens. The lens is not really noisy while shooting vid.

dual pixel af in the canon offerings is one of the best on the market. I will probably say my Fuji looks sharper and with film preset looks better than a canon body though. Non edited video is much more presentable with fuji. Canon does require massaging in post processing the vids. I guess it all depends on your preference.

Test out the 80D and use a spider holster. You'll hardly notice the weight of that body.

Test and physically handle each camera and go from there....

.... Can I ...

It is your wife camera. Ask her if she is OK with large P&S instead or small DSLR. Those are two straight choices she have if you want to use Canon lenses.

SL1 or SL2 all day! Throw in a pancake lens and you've got an ultra portable dslr that can still use all of your other lenses!

Rocking the SL2 and (mostly) the 24-105 f4 L, 50mm f1.8 STM, and 135mm f2 L along with a few others. Biding my time until a FF upgrade ;)
