I ordered a Tamron 18-400 for that very purpose. Ran into a long time pro photog in the woods that waxed poetic about his. I am cautiously optimistic.

Looking forward to seeing some of your results. Sounds like it should be pretty good.

Cheers,
Joe

These are sweet shots, Terry. Careful though, you might catch the Avian Flu... aka, where you take pictures of nothing but birds :)

Nice shots, but the vignetting doesn't do it for me. Really takes away from the quality. Also, they seem noisier than they should be?

It was very dark and very foggy, hence the 1000 ISO. Even then, some work needed in PP. I make no apologies for vignetting. I like the way it concentrates the eye on the subject. A matter of personal taste, no doubt.

Of course! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Nothing against vignetting, but for me a little more subtlety would benefit the photos.

But still, 1000 ISO should not produce that much noise on an 80D. Maybe something to do with postprocessing and/or compression?

File much compressed for the web.

I haven't used the Tamron, but I bought the Sigma 18-300mm thinking it would be nice to have that wide range of focal lengths. I went through the MFA procedure with the dock to ensure proper focus for my camera but I never could get an image I liked from that lens. I'm not picky, but the image quality is seriously lacking in those super zooms. I would second the recommendation of the Canon 18-135 IS USM, or if you want more reach the Canon 70-300 IS II USM is also a great lens for the money.
