I also shoot volleyball and (soon) basketball. 5D III and 7D II.
QUESTION: Between EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM (the new one) and f/1.2L II USM (not IS)...
Shooting at 1/800 to 1/1000 shutter speed, I'm wondering if the lack of IS on the faster lens is a factor.
Does IS really add anything at those fast shutter speeds?
Thoughts??

No, not at 85mm and 1/800 to 1/1000sec. Forget about IS or lack of same.

I used my Canon 5D MK IV with the 24-70 2.8 lens. My daughter played club volleyball and high school. Gym lighting is OK at best. ISO and shutter speed is a fine balance to capture the action. I use Lightroom to sharpen and clean up the noise, shooting RAW.

I use a 7D with 70-200 almost exclusively when I shoot volleyball....usually around ISO 3200(ish)....don't really worry about cleaning up the noise too much as I think it's pretty much expected, especially when compared to the film days. Here are a few:

This was my first taste of High School VB as my daughter is a freshmen. Loved capturing the emotional moments during the course of a game. This was after a big win over a divisional rival for Districts.

For this one, I was at 1/800, f2.8 and iso 5000. That's about where the original poster was, but he mentioned the poor gym lighting. This is one of the better gyms in my area- I love to shoot here because the lights are so good!

I love action shots where both eyes are visible.
