Thanks for the comments Toby and Lester.

Lester - think this is just an unfortunate accident. The springtails are normally around the rim of the compost bin under the lid. I think they must come out on top of the lid at night and then get stuck on the puddle of water that often forms there. Not certain why they come out though.
