Ian Millar, former lead product designer/creative director at f-stop Gear left f-stop last year and has founded a new company Shimoda Designs (external link). I first learned about his company from FM and they have some interesting ideas in these new bags. They also have a kickstarter (external link) that I've participated in that ends in a couple of weeks. Ian is a great guy and I hope his company does well which it might as the kickstarter has currently tripled the original goal. As of today there's two weeks left in the kickstarter. I just found out about this bag yesterday when I was searching for an insert for a regular backpacking bag I just bought. I had just bought the backpack insert Tenba makes when I found the link to the Shimoda. It looks like a great bag but I just bought a Gregory Targhee and the insert and can't return it really because I can't tolerate another day carrying my gear in the Lowepro 250. I'd have to wait till February and return the items I just bought :(. Oh well....

The kickstarter ended a couple of weeks ago and was successful - Shimoda raised 6 times the amount of their goal. Ian announced an add-on program for backers: you could buy any of the initial product offers in addition to products you bought when you made your pledge at the same 30% discount. This was very helpful as some products were only offered in kits in the kickstarter offering, and the add-on meant you could get the piece you wanted by itself. Shipping is free for backers.

Ian is very happy with the response and it looks like Shimoda Designs is going to be viable. So now there is a choice at the top end of the market and there's a quality alternative to the f-stop backpacks and accessories.

Damn...wish I'd seen this when it was active! Ian was awesome, and is one of the prime reasons I own an F-Stop bag from back in the day. I'll definitely be taking a harder look into Shimoda; thanks for the head's up, Peter!
