Happy New Year! This tree is about a block from our house, and our dog insists on walking by it every morning. We often see one eagle in it, but we rarely see two. Fortunately eagles tend to stay put for quite a while, so I had time to go back to the house and get a camera.

Trumpeter swans are wintering in our area. A couple hundred fly by every morning and evening.

Here's one more photo from this morning. It needs a caption! Any suggestions?

First shots of the New Year...

Curious why they all scattered deep into the big evergreen, then I saw this guy cruising by overhead. Pretty sure it is a juvenile Bald Eagle, we have several eagles in the area...

I was gob-smacked to get this shot at 1/60 sec hand held, with the AF Point on the head of the dragonfly - awesome IS on this lens.

Cheers

We had our first set of snowfalls a couple weeks ago, which drove me to get out and try to take advantage of it. On a whim I took a drive to a location I hadn't visited yet and found a swarm of gulls enjoying the rushing water of Carlyle Lake's East Dam here in IL. I don't get to do a lot of BIF stuff so it was a great opportunity for me to dial in settings and practice. All of these were shot on a 5D4 with the 1.4X III attached.

Works pretty well as a water ski lens too.

Decided to take the light-weight combo out today: 80D + 100-400II + 1.4xIII. Such a delight to carry around in the biting cold.

So... not sure if you can see it in the photos below, but that hazy/veiled soft look from this lens combo is very evident, especially in the raven photo. It's the one knock I've always had against this lens, but they clean up well enough in post that I can get past it. It reminds me of the 50L's rendering: the detail is there, it's just "smudged" a little. The MFA is adjusted, my shutter speeds are high enough to mitigate hand shake, and ISO isn't robbing me of too much detail. It could be atmospherics at work, but it was nice and clear today.
