Just found out about this sale. This is an in-store only sale. I checked with the store in Kansas (Overland Park) and they currently have 10 in stock, so it doesn't look like a bait-and-switch or anything like that. I paid almost that much for my new iMac a week ago. If I hadn't already done that, I would be driving to Overland Park today for sure. This is supposed to be a dream machine for video editing. It is a nationwide sale so I thought I would let people know about it.

Holy cow that's expensive. Sure it's good quality hardware, but to get a PC with similar performance I'd expect you'd pay maybe $2K from Dell. I looked at the Dell and Lenovo sites, they're both absolutely terrible for actually finding computers with the specs you like.

But don't forget the Dell 5K display will blow you about $2K as well, well it would have if they hadn't dropped it from the line up. I think at the moment you have to go with an LG to get a 5K monitor to use with a Win 10 system.

I got my Dell system back in Aug 2015 and at the time I was able to get a Dell XPS with Intel i7 6700 processor, 16GB RAM 256 GB SSD, 2TB HDD, 960 GTX with 2GB VRAM, optical drive, a full set of card slots which included CF, plus the usual other interfaces. I also got that UP2715K 5K display all for the same total price as the most basic 27" iMac.

I know that a lot of people extol the fact that the iMac is all in one, but if I were to run the Mac I would still need external enclosures for the additional optical and hard drives, as well as a multifunction card reader. These would probably end up in multiple cases, and so be even less convenient to move about if required than a single tower unit.

Note that this is the new iMac Pro, not the iMac:

The regular 27" iMacs (mid 2017) currently start at $1699 including the 5K display.
