On-camera SB-300 operated as dumb optical trigger only @ 1/128 manual power. Key was bounced off 15" cardboard from a frozen pizza taped to a floor lamp. Ambient was fully suppressed, with fill and b/g being served by stray light from the key. The hamster received a $10 bribe for two shots. D500, Nikkor 55-200 VR II kit zoom @ f/4.2 and 85mm (130mm FF equiv). Canon, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Sony, Profoto.

Perhaps a useful illustrative reminder (or entertaining link) with multiple examples that often for on-location, or destination gigs, that: “LESS IS OFTEN MORE”… (regardless of camera/lighting manufacturer). Keep it simple! Get-In and Get-out. BARONZ STUDIOS: https://www.youtube.com/user/BARONZSTUDIO/videos ![]() Always enjoyed viewing this creative photographer’s work and the axiom principle of: “the eye of the photographer” (aka the creative blending of lighting, exposure-triangle, composition, posing & “secret sauce” i.e. emotion/expression) all in upbeat videos. [for the techie/gear-heads: this guy shot with a Canon camera until about two years ago when he switched to Nikon; but consistently only utilizes mostly one, or sometimes two OCF Speed-Light. (sometimes outside the lack of power shows, with some extra post processing or post-HDR, to compensate, but overall always consistent)]. Happy shooting everyone! Enjoy. Just one view… Mary This is the ocf speedlite thread. The reference to hotshot flash in the title is meant to distinguish them from the studio strobes used in another thread. Once upon a time there was a solitary thread dedicated to off. Because it was a mixture of speedlite and portable strobes discussions it became a bit muddled as some results with one tyoe couldn't be achieved with the other. So the mods split the thread and gave the above title.

I'm pretty happy with my one speedlight off camera shots. While they are usually well lit and make for nice portraits (whether formal or informal) the results are usually pretty vanilla...not what I'd call "creative". Here's a couple from last fall. ![]() ![]() ![]() IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/Z5Aizm ![]() ![]() ![]() Cory

Any insights as to how you controlled/modified the light from the flash? 30D w/ grip, 7Dmk2, Tokina 12-24 f/4, Canon EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Canon 70-200 f/4L IS, 430EX, 190xb, 680b, lots of little stuff, & almost enough brains to be considered dangerous

Flash had its Nikon incandescant filter to merge a spotlight on the background, hence the dragged shutter. Setup, shoot and breakdown took 30min. Sometimes a Speedlight is easier than a Profoto pack, especially when one is schlepping four stands, three knuckles, and two panels down a windy street. Canon, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Sony, Profoto.
