Here’s one of Liam from earlier today. Should’ve used the octo on the floor for fill but had my hands full already with the two strobes and the speedlight using up all 3 channels. Next time I’ll trigger the speedlight by flash next time and use the 3x Xplor 600’s on channels ABC. Also going to lower the rim light. Any other suggestions?

What trigger are you using? Why not using 5 groups?

I see the speedlight as a background light.

There are endless ways to configure the 3 channels, you had a ton of light.;-)a

You can always use the octa as you main light and use a reflector for fill. Then make the speedlight(w/ a snoot and grid) your hair light and use the another 600 with a grid as your background light.

With the octa as your main light it will wrap around your subject more depending on how far or close you place it to your subject. Unless the heavy shadow was the look you were going for.

Yup. Gelled (blue) speedlight on BG. Used the Flashpoint R2 TTL Transmitter (all lights are Flashpoint with built-in receivers). I didn't think I could use 5 groups, no?

With the 7D II, you can use 5 groups. Change Fn 06 to 05 on the R2 trigger.

Another self-portrait test.
This time, 1 and 2 lights with a reflector.

Key (right): Explor600 1/32 with Glow Parapop 38"
Fill (left): Silver 43" reflector
Background: White pop-up with Explor600 1/16+.3
Posing stand: Boom loosely in place to allow me to focus on the end of it. I swing it out of the way during shooting

1st shot: 200mm, key, bg, and reflector light sources
2nd shot: 135mm, no bg light or reflector
3rd shot: 135mm, no bg light but add silver reflector
Post: Mostly SOOC. bumped whites to +41 on the high-key, first one, bumped white balance from 5450 to 6000 on all to warm it a bit.


What I learned:
-I've been unhappy with my previous high-key photos. Too little contrast as the bg light has been too bright. I'm using a light meter and setting the bg light equal to 1 stop brighter than on subject.
1. I moved my seating position further away from the bg to reduce some spillback
2. I bumped down bg light about 2/3 stop below the key. I like this balance much better, getting much better contrast on the subject.
3. I also wanted to see how the reflector addresses shadows, having the hat on.
4. I can tell I like a bit more shadow, at least for my own pictures.
5. Why the heck didn't I use the boom to focus on in my previous self-portraits? It saves me tons of time farting around with focus issues. Duh.....watched Gavin Hoey do that.
6. Next test I'll add a hair light for the mid-key pictures to get me to stand out from the bg.

I recently decided I wanted to try some 1-1 tuition for studio lighting setups and to try my hand at working with professional models. Having a load of kit, and learning from books and webinars, I felt I needed to find a mentor to help solidify that and kind of validate my understanding, this is one of the setups and the results.

Shot overview:
Canon 5D MkIII; Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM @ 70mm | f/13 | 1/200 | ISO 100. Lighting, 60cm Octo positioned just above and in front of the models head, feathered towards the camera and flagged to avoid flare. Kicker to camera left, 140 x 30 strip SBox + 5cm grid. Speed lite off camera right for extra hair light and a little extra background spill.

Indeed it is, my home studio (ex-garage) has 2.5m high ceiling, and was all painted white, after this session I decided to re-paint all dark grey to help, as this helped to demonstrate how much any lights I used were causing so much splash. I have v-flats and other things to help, but I'd rather have a global soloution as a base.

That works. What I do is drape a black cloth along the walls. Keeps the room looking nicer for first impressions. It's easy to draw the cloth into position. I can also use a bit of the white wall for a reflector as desired.

I painted the walls of my first studio gray and it was a depressing place to work. After six months, I repainted them white and it changed the mood greatly. I much prefer to have black V Flats and a bright cheery space.
