Racing through the night at Daytona.

Very nice! I'm still working though my Rolex photos, hope I got some good stuff too! At least the weather was decent this year!

Thanks.
I had more night panning shots this year that were keepers, so I'm getting better there. I was experimenting with slower shutter speeds during the day this year, also using AI servo as well as stopping down to smaller apertures and was disappointed in the amount of missed focus shots during daylight hours. Oh well.
I found the lighting this year wasn't the best with it being overcast most of the time. The colors didn't really pop for me this year.
Still a lot of fun!

Which auto focus mode and shutter do you prefer for a higher percentage of keepers ?

Well, last year I used one shot mode in manual, but I was using bigger apertures like 4.5-5.6 and high shutter speeds and it gave nice looking shots, but no motion in the tires.
This year I figured I'd use AI servo (still in manual) to keep focus on the cars while shooting lower shutter speeds stopped down, but for whatever reason I had lots of missed focus or blurry shots. This was at the exit of the international horseshoe heading into the kink. I got plenty of keepers but the ratio wasn't super.
Last year and this year both shooting the 1D III with 100-400L V1.

For panning... single shot and prefocus on the spot where I want the car in the frame. Simple.

I'll definitely give that a whirl.
Do you use back button focus with this technique?

Bummed that I cut the back end of the car off in this shot as it's one of my better pans. So I decided to crop it into a close up.

learning to use BBF has been a revelation..one I wished I had learned a long time ago...

couple old ones from Petit 2017...I am wide awake, just looking for stuff to edit.

I was sitting in the small bleacher section at the exit of the infield before the cars hit the banking. I guess it would be the entrance to turn 6.
