Older shot of mine, but it popped up on my Windows Wallpaper, and I liked it.

Since my daughter had to miss swim practice last night due to a homework assignment, I went out and did something that I have not done for a few years. I drove out to Pepper Ave. in Colton, CA to shot some night shot at the Union Pacific West Colton yard and the GATX repair facility. I was disappointed to find that the UP yard was dimly lit compared to the last time I shot there at night. However, it was still fun to see what I could capture.

Below one of the yard workers is in the cab of UP 4318 getting it ready for the road crew to take the train out.

This other shot shows the switcher at the GATX facility just after they tied it down after moving cars around.

Kool! They let the public come out and photograph the trains within the yard??

The Norfolk Train Yard in Elkhart has "No Trespassing" signs on the road leading into the yard. If you try going in they have yard police that will stop you. A real bummer :-(

I was shooting from Pepper Ave. the road that passes over the tracks that lead in and out of the yard. Pepper Ave is a public road that allows a vantage point into the departure yard at the Union Pacific West Colton yard. The photo below shows the photo line of people capturing shots of UP 844 making a reverse move out of the yard back in Nov. 2011.

Oh how I have always wished there was access to the Elkhart train yard similar to what you have here.

Thank you so much for showing us this picture!

I've been trying for three years to catch this "Cabbage Car" (a gutted F40PH with the prime mover and traction motors removed and a large roll-up door installed in the side allowing the former engine compartment to be used for baggage) actually heading a train instead of trailing. Finally had some success today.
