When this was first noticed a few years back it was ID'd as a Clapper Rail, those in the know have since corrected the ID to Ridgeway. Had disappeared for over 60 years and finally made a comeback.

Several years ago it WAS a Clapper Rail. The group in charge of bird species/names (American Ornithologists Union (AOU)) did what is called a "Split" on this species in 2014.

In the split Clapper Rails were divided into: 1. Clapper Rail (Atlantic and Gulf Coast), 2. Ridgway's Rail (Western Mexico, California, Arizona) and Mangrove Rail (Central and South America).

For birdwatchers we suddenly have two or three different species in place of one!

Nice images of both the Rail and the White-faced Ibis.

Thanks for that explanation Markmcc, that really clears it up. For Bolsa Chica it was really a big deal when it appeared after a 60-year absence. Then the next year they let everyone know of the name change.
