Hi thanks, it is called a lensball. I purchased mine directly from Lensball but I see Amazon sells them too. If you google lensball, you can get the information :p

Fair shout, couldn't agree more. I'm sure if I was born 50 years earlier I would have had so much more time on my hands as I wouldn't have spent days on end reviewing and reading up on my next purchase!! Not just camera stuff either!

Thanks for the reassuring post.

I've put the nifty (I never normally use it as i dont like the feel and sound of it) on my camera today just around the house, I think it is a focal length I could spend most of my time at. Mostly taking photos of my 2 and 4 year olds. My next buy will either be the 50L or the new canon 85mm, but to be honest, I wouldn't get as much use out of the 85L, and it's quite a bit bigger than I'd like. I find the 24-70ii quite a chunky heavy beast. But I love the size of my 35mm F2 IS (very similar to 50L) and I like the weight of my 16-35 F4 (only a tiny bit heavier than the 50L). So focal range and ergonomics look perfect.

Focus issues/Internet scares aside, the thing I like least of the pics I've seen on this thread, is the CA. Do you all learn to live with it/embrace it, or can you partly correct in post?

So, which of your lenses do you find the best for photographing your young ones? We're expecting our first child this summer, and of course I'm already thinking about which of my lenses will get the nod :)

On the topic of CA... I honestly never notice it. Focus shift either. Just shoot, don't let these things scare you off what is an awesome lens.

Hi Matthew. Congratulations, good times. Firstly you won't have as much time to do photography stuff (best to get over this sooner rather than later!!) so mixing in baby and family pics is a great way of keeping your hand on the camera ;-)a

Around the house, my 35 is my point and shoot. Love everything about the lens and the results. 35/50 are all you need for baby pics.

The 85mm comes out every now and again especially when I think I haven't taken many nice portraits of them for a while.

24-70 ii comes out for day trips as a one lens does everything. Also tend to use this for family event days. Although since getting the 16-35, the 24-70 is probably feeling a little left out. When out for the day my general rule is to take one lens only, that way I can enjoy my day out and not even think about changing lenses.

70-300 has pretty much been relegated to the zoo and airshows!!

I feel quite lucky with my gear selection.

The reason for wanting the 50L, is to get something that produces results that stand out. We've just had a phone refresh at work and the cameras on the iPhone 8 and Samsung S8 are amazing. Staggering bits of tech really. Im currently thinking the 50L could be a focal length that i could use a lot, in a managable size, that gives me some wow results, that are unmistakably different to a phone camera.

Good advice, and the insights into the inevitable life change are duely noted :p it hasn’t hit me yet, everything now is same-same haha

Seeing as how the wider angle lenses make the most sense for documentary type shooting, it’s interesting to note that I rarely shoot under 100mm these days... seems like I might be visiting the wide angle focal lengths again, which will be a nice change of pace!

iPhone camera is so much more convenient than the DSLR, but at some point you’ll do a comparison b/w the iPhone Portrait mode, and a wide open 50L. It’s a fun exercise :)

I have 4. You are about to learn the meaning of selflessness. Your free time will drop dramatically. And you’ll love (almost) every minute of it!

I shoot the family mostly with 35 and 50mm. I had a 135 but wasn’t using it much. I have an 85 but it’s used less than the other two. 35 is my go to.

Congratulations and enjoy!

It's much more interesting, much more challenging, and much more rewarding being a barely competent father than all this photography stuff.

But keep your camera close by none-the-less. :-)
