GOES-S follows GOES-R in the next generation of NOAA weather satellites. GOES-R has already entered operational service as GOES-16/GOES-East, where it brought the high-resolution, high frequency images you likely saw during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. GOES-S, the second in the four-satellite series, will become GOES-17/GOES-West, providing similar coverage for the western US and Pacific.

The launch vehicle was a United Launch Alliance Atlas V with four solid rocket boosters.
