Canon 85L IS is a true mastepiece. I fell in love from the first shot after renting it and ordered the lens right away. I’ve never paid full msrp for any lens let alone such an expensive one. It is easily the best lens I’ve ever used and I sold my 85Lii a few days later and could not be happier. The new 85L IS is better in every way, I have no doubt Canon will discontinue the 1.2 version. I shot side by side and found the bokeh of the new 85 is superior, especially in the corners! Not to mention it is much sharper and the colors and contrast are even stronger. I loved 85Lii and always thought it was super sharp and had the best colors but in direct comparison, 85L IS is an easy winner. CA is still present but it so much less purple. I am so glad that Canon did not follow the new trend of optical perfection that tends to render bland/flat sterile look, instead they went back to their roots and focused on rendering fine art portraiture prrformance that 50L, 85L and 135L are known for.
IS is incredible and optimizied for video including panning. AF is super smooth with dpaf tracking. Love this lens equally for photos and 4k video. It is actually a great value considering what this lens provides on 5div. Can’t beleive it is being compared to the massive and heavy Sigma Art version that is simply not practical, or Tamron 85mm that has entirely different rendering. The only lens that the new 85L can truly be compared with is 85Lii and it is a winner except for the 2/3 stop of light transmission. Also, 85Lii used prices are crashing approaching $1000 which makes it a bargain of the decade and IMO it is still second best to the new 85.
