"New head does HSS and HS???"
"Just to clarify, with a TTL/HSS able Skyport HS transmitter you will not be able to shoot in HS"
You now have me confused, HSS as-in IGBT High speed sync is just that HSS. HS (Hyper sync as Elinchrom call it) or Tail end sync is for a traditional studio strobe, i.e NOT IGBT, also known by some as overdrive? i.e a studio flash tube with a long flash duration and timing of the shutter to take the shot within the peak of that duration. The Skyport Pro firmware update now drives the new 500 in HSS and older 400's etc in HS, the HS button (IIRC) when updated now becomes the TTL button, this (from what I see on mine) lets you set the output of each group in TTL, TTL will NOT work with non IGBT flashes. HSS or HS is now automatically set when your Camera body's shutter goes over its sync speed. Is my understanding of the new firmware etc for Skyport Pro incorrect, are you saying that an HSS enabled Skyport Pro(LCD) Elinchrom transmitter does not support HS? I have upgraded mine and HS is automatically set on my ELB-400's when the Camera goes over it's sync speed...
Sorry for the long post just want to check my knowledge base with the experts...
An upgraded Skyport HS transmitter will be able to use HSS/TTL on ELB 500 and HS/Manual on the rest of the ELB line up.
So your not confused
The support for HS is depending on both transmitter and pack.
In the future, you will NOT be able to do HS with the ELB 500 TTL regardless of the transmitter version you use.
Simply because Hi-Sync on the ELB 500 TTL is very limited, the flash duration is only slow enough on max power thus hi-sync is not available thru the whole power range.
Hopes this clear some stuff up.
