A miracle happened. A ruby-crowned kinglet actually sat still for more than a second, allowing me to get a few shots off. It was a first for me, being able to photograph this perpetually moving bird.

Man, you aren't lying, Kinglets are a mile-per-minute, never stopping! Good capture!

This Golden-Crowned Kinglet landed so close to me I had to back up to be able to focus on it. Never before nor anytime since has a Kinglet sat still long enough for a really good shot. They certainly are a frustrating subject!

My first shots with the 500mm Mk2. I owned the Mk1 for a few years then moved to a Sigma 150-600 S to give me a little bit more versatility when shooting video. The Sigma lasted less than a year before I decided to go back to a 500mm lens. I didn't get along with the Sigma at all. Both shot with the 5D mK4.

My son and I spent a couple of hours at Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove, Oregon on Sunday. It was pretty warm and for a change, dry.

All shots handheld, with a 1.4X III converter.

Saw 42 species including 6 raptor species (no good photos of them, unfortunately).

A couple of shots from my second trip out with the 500mm. Tried the lens on the 1D MK4 this time in very trying conditions. Really poor dark and flat lighting. Have dialled in +10 MA with the combo and this seems to get the best out of the pair but I need to recheck that just to make sure. That's +8 with the 5DMK4 and +10 with the 1DMK4.

Lovely shots, Gerd! Do you commonly refer to them as grosbeaks where you are? I've always thought Coccothraustes coccothraustes was commonly referred to as a hawfinch, but maybe that is just in the UK?

We have the evening grosbeak here in North America (Coccothraustes vespertinus) that is a close relative, as is the hooded grosbeak in Mexico (I have not seen that one).
