Setting up lighting in a studio is one thing, but sometimes you're challenged on location. I had such a situation this week while shooting at a tradeshow.

I was hired to shoot social media headshots in a tradeshow booth. I packed up strobes, softboxes, umbrellas, and just about everything else that would allow me the flexibility to set up as needed on site. Upon arrival, I discovered that the booth was much smaller than anticipated - there was really no room for a backdrop, lights, and camera without blocking off the client's banners and displays.

With a little re-jiggering, we arranged the booth in a way that worked out fine. I set up a 53" wide roll of Savage white backdrop on one side of the booth, and set up the camera, tripod, and single strobe on the other side with my smallest umbrella. Here's a look:

Note the umbrella is extra high in the photo as I was still setting up, and I moved the tripod out of the walkway once the show opened. A couple of sandbags were also added for safety.

Ultimately, it worked out fine and most of the shots looked great, with slight adjustments of the light/umbrella for those wearing glasses. Here's one example:

Perhaps this will help someone else in a similar situation. Some quick specs:

Canon 5D Mark IV
24-70mm lens
Savage Pure White 66 backdrop paper on stand
Profoto D2 set at approx. 7.5
Small umbrella/shoot through
Person positioned approx. 2' in front of backdrop
Long days standing

I know all about small, confined spaces lol. If you've ever seen some of my setup shots, I do them in my living room haha.

^^ Nice. I was thinking of pulling out seamless paper over the weekend for kids shots but just got lazy.

I use an Avenger F301 Baby Wall Plate that attaches to a light stand where I use masking tape to secure the 12" acrylic 'stage'. As long as I place my subject near the center, there's not much chance of it tipping. For my 24" acrylic stages (black & white glossy), I just place those on my rolling cabinet you see on the left of the BTS shot above.

Here's the link to the wall plate if you're interested.

Call me crazy, but you have some amazing camera skills! The before and after almost look like totally different people :-P (My wife's birthday happens to be St. Patrick's Day, so there is no such thing as too much green this month.)

Did a fitness shoot today. Had Neewer Vision5 strobe in 55" gridded octabox on the left front, Flashpoint AD200 in 31" gridded octabox on the right rear and the reflector across from the 55". This young lady is competing in her first NPC Bikini competition on 3/31/18 and wanted to document the last 5 months dedication to her body.

Playing around with light and shadows a couple weekends ago. Large bank of natural light windows with a couple flashes added for more light. Some stretched fabric and ..... well this is what we got.

Been a while since I posted. Made some major changes to my gear, switched back to Canon in the last few months!
