has anyone bought any ebay lenses from Japan? any recommended sellers? I've heard some good reviews from people who have bought medium format lenses from japan but I'm thinking of getting a used macro this way. It would be nice to find a known, reliable seller since ebays ratings can be unreliable

I've bought a few accessories from Japan and China, but never any big stuff like glass. Makes me nervous even when buying small stuff.

Personally, I wouldn't do it.

I've been shopping E-Bay for some Pentax 645 gear. The prices from Japan are generally better than from the US. Shipping is, as expected, generally higher. I've checked with Customs, and this type of gear generally clears with no issues/duties. I haven't been able to pull the trigger, due to shipping costs/potential return issues.

Tom,
Film gear: Elan 7NE / Elan 7 / EOS T2
Yashica FX-D (x2) & FX-3 Super 2000 / DSB 28mm f/2.8 / 50mm ML f/2 / 135mm ML f/2.8 / Sigma Zoom-gamma II 21-35mm f/3.4.2 / Yashica ML 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 / Tokina 70-210mm ML f/4.

I havent read many complaints about the quality of gear from Japan, usually its very well described and even specks of dust are mentioned. Even with the higher shipping costs you can often save 20%. I think the return shipping costs in the rare event that something does need to be returned is where any risk lies. I'm pretty tempted to take the chance on a frequent seller with excellent feedback. I almost pulled the trigger on one today. He had sold a different lens with almost the same description a couple weeks ago and got excellent feedback.

I have and I would do it again in a heartbeat, described perfectly, packaged perfectly, fast shipping. They even sent a note and a Japanese snack with the lens.

Look up knobuyuki777, they are legit. Also on a sort of related note, the random tamron I bought from them is a beast of a macro lens.
