Default diffuser, omnibounce, tissue paper huh?

Hello,
I am venturing into the world of flash photography. I read Curtis' short tutorials which are useful. I like to know if there are any articles on the different usage of diffusers, bounce, umbrellas etc. Like when should I use a diffuser? Indoors only? How about those spherical like thingy that is hooked to the flash head?

thanks.
