Now if this scanner is 36-bit what good does that do for me if it only gives PS an 8-bit image? ? ?

Different bits in play. Same as RAW bits vs color depth (# of colors).

You might find this KB item helpful too.

Scott,

Here's my attempt at your scanned image. It's not that much better than what you posted. I basically ended up just boosting the saturation in 3 layers (1st for the overall picture, 2nd for the faces and 3rd for the trousers) and adjusting the individual colors separately. As a finishing touch, I did a Despeckle on the image and then applied a slight USM.

Well that looks pretty good Leo. I'll have to try that on the original scan.

I think you made my cheeks a little too rosy, though.

Scott,

Instamatic was known as 126 size film. It came in a plastic cassette similar to 110 (but larger), where the film wound from one spool to the other in the cassette, and it was a square format. Instamatic was very popular in the late '60s (don't ask me how I remember, oops, know that)

Scott, considering that your little brother doesn't have the rosy checks, it must be you. :) Whatever I did for your face, I also did equally for your brother since they're both on the same layer. Face it, you just have (or had) more of a "baby face" than your brother.

BTW, I used the adjustment layers for the hue/saturation adjustment so that each could be adjusted multiple times at any time without degrading the original image. And, of course, the despeckle and the USM was applied to a copy of the background layer.
