Greetings! I have been looking at digital cameras (extensively!) and have narrowed it down to either a Canon G1 or a Pro90 is. I've seen photos taken by both and I'm impressed. But I'm also undecided... I like the Pro90's larger lens and greater focal length; also the image stabilization. But I'm a little concerned about the lower resolution, and for that reason wonder if the G1 might be a better selection? Any comments or observations would be much appreciated! (I've also posted this question in the Pro90 forum, I figured perhaps I'll see two different sides of the coin that way. Hope that's okay...)

Hi, I was faced with the same question a while ago before I made my final purchase.
IMO, the largest important difference between both cameras is the Pro90 having the 10X optical zoom. Some others have mentioned that the G1 affords higher resolution, but really the difference is slight unless you are into printing HUGE pictures. Pro90's lower resolution still gives you good average-sized print outs. I purchased the G1 in the end because I figured that at the top of my wish list is portability and easy of carriage. The G1 is built like a mini tank with a thousand functions... the Pro90 is simply too huge to lug around comfortably and definitely not something I would willingly carry while on a vacation. Also, if you somehow require larger zoom lenses in the future, there are add-ons available AFAIK. But, this is only me. |

Same here. I went for the G1 because of the higher resolution and slightly better image quality. I love the design and the 10X zoom that the Pro90 offers, but since I've got a bunch of SLRs with good and long optics I decided i can manage with the G1. Price was of course one major factor. I used to shoot with HP C912 (Pentax Ei2000), which was a total waste of money; nice SLR like design and handling, but awful image quality. Broke two of those during the guarantee period and after some disgussion I got the manufacturer to buy it back from me. Went for the G1 and I couldn't be happier. Despite the poor wievfinder and the "not so ergonomic" design, it's a great camera. Just my two cents here, thanks for reading.
