I see D30's on feeBay for $200, much lower that the Nikon D50 or D70. Maybe worth it for that price, but...

if you can afford a D50, you ought to be pretty much able to get a Rebel XT. If new is too high, try to find a good used one. You'll likely be happier than with the alternatives.
