Default setup tips for pre dance photos

Hi, I am fairly new to the digital SLR world. I currently have a rebel xti, the 17-85IS lens, the 70-300IS lens and a 100mm macro, all canon lenses. i do not have an additional flashes besides the onboard camera flash.

I need to take pictures of my son and his date this weekend for a school dance. I will take some indoor and some outdoor.

I am looking for some general camera setup guidelines as far as exposure, ISO etc.
Also what lense would you recommend. my thoughts were the 17-85.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.
