Don, thanks for all your work getting this going, I look forward to each weeks challenge. I did the Yo-Yo spinning picture. Your vision of the picture was right on, I just wanted to get something entered, the weather was too bad to go outside. Even when I look at it, I find myself wishing the blury YoYo wasn't there so I could see the rest of the shop. I'll prepare more next time. Great job to all who entered, I liked them all. The winning entry really did the Speed job, looks like he is going into hyper drive. John

bauerman did all the preliminary work and I just added a few suggestions. I had really expected him to host the first challenge, but he mentioned he was busy and then a few people were asking for it to begin, so I just jumped in. Hopefully, I didn't jump on any toes in the process. This challenge is a community thing and the rules will evolve as they need to and it will either live or die depending on our support. Thanks for taking my quick assessment of your YoYo in a positive way. I don't think every host needs to mention every photo -- or more than the Top 3, really -- but with just a few entries and this being the first challenge, I thought it might be useful. Thanks again for joining in. Cheers, Don |

Thanks for the feedback Don, (circles of fire). Should have ditched the tripod for a moment or two while i dived through the fire rings.... Now that would have been a winner !!!! HAHAHHA
Appreciate your effort in giving us all some feedback.

Sorry about the title thing Don. Still trying to navigate this new world. I'll try and get it right in the future. Great job with the first challenge. I think this will be a good time as well as a good learning experience.

Thanks bauerman for floating the concept and roughing in the details, and Don for jump-starting the challenge! Some really great submissions for the first round.
Don, I quite agree with your assessment : slight difference between "Speed" and "Motion." While we're on the subject of motion and blurring, I find I often make use of 1/20th sec. with my G5 - easily blurs the background, even with relatively slow pan speed, and also capable of rendering fairly clear static images. I suppose this would correspond to 1/30th sec. on a reflex, due to the absence of mirror shake. Also quite useable for for low-light situations. Quick question - for future challenges, should we include links, or attach images? I see a pretty even split between the two... K |

Definitely, we should put images in the messages -- it's a nuisance to click a link. Having said that, some sites only allow links, so we shouldn't disqualify images that are linked. Thanks for swinging in. Don |

I am really honored that my entry won this first challenge. I enjoyed all entries and frankly I thought the award would be bestowed on a couple of other pictures. My son was very excited when he found out and he went into hyperdrive (running back and forth again) here in our NYC pad last night.
Don, thanks for getting the ball rolling. I guess I and a handful of others have been anticipating this challenge and were ready to jump out of the lurk mode for this. I think the weekly challengees will draw out more enthusiasts into participating. I got a kick about your comment about my son having a bandana and just robbing a convenience store. Well after all, it is NYC. The weather was nice and my son wanted to play and run at the sidewalk so I told him to do a few laps while I took pictures. The 'bandana' that he had on is actually a fleece cap that looks like a dinosaur's back - it is his favorite winter cap. (Check out the spines, it's a cool cap). The original picture was ok, but it had flecks of color in the background that drew away from the subject. That's when I decided to render the background into black and white. Your analysis is spot on and practically read my mind. Folks, please allow me a few more hours to think of a new challenge. i have several themes in mind and I still have to decide which one to post. Don, with your permission, I will mostly cut and paste the rules and wordings of your first challenge to maintain continuity. Besides, it would be easier for me Thanks again and have a pleasant week! Donn took the ball and ran - and got the first one going. I have sold my G-Series camera and have moved into the world of SLR's - so I will leave you with what I still think was a good idea - challenges for the very capable G-series cameras.....rules will be rules - its the pitchas that count!

It was a great idea... my sadness at your not participating in your original concept is tempered by congratulations for your new camera. You've done some great work in the other challenges and I'm sure you'll continue that -- especially with a camera that gives you a little more control. Plus, it's always fun learning a new camera. We'll look for your photos in the other forums. Have fun and know that we'll remember you for starting all this. Don |

Thanks Don and Bauerman for your work thus far.....
Impressed by your judging and level of comments Don, I don't think we could have hoped for a better example to kick things off with. I suspect an entirely independant judge would have placed your picture (obviously not 3rd...that's taken!) ....however your choice of winner is spot on for me...as soon as I saw it I thought 'speed' . From a personal point of view I was particularly pleased..this being my first 'made to measure' entry...the few previous competitions I've looked at having received 'stock' pictures. It cetainly concentrates the mind and brings together all you've learned in photography....too often I'm finding, especially with digital (and a young child in the house), it's easy to be lazy and just 'snap away'. What I do need to do for future 'studio' entries is sought out my custom white balance. Thanks again Rich
