Default Distance Red Eye / Portrait

Hi, I just got my 420EX and I am trying it out. I went to my daughters musical and took photos of her on stage from a distance away, all the photos have distintive red eye. Arg! I took some photos of her at home before she went and those were all at close range, no red eye at all. Anyone else have this problem with distance shooting? Also how do you get the portrait setting to work well, I'm trying to get her in focus with the background out of focus, do I have to take it from far away and zoom in? Any help would be appreciated. Cheryl
