hmm... i'm feeling like it would be, assuming you exposed the initial RAW shot for the midtones & made several versions of the exported jpeg files at different exposure levels, and combined them in the usual way...
if i'm wrong, why exactly?

Yes. A very good way to get a stable shot, but I keep forgetting to make one before I go for a ride.
Next time! -js

An Image Stabilization Lens helps a lot when handholding.
3 Bracket exposures taken handheld using the AE Bracket mode +/- 1 stop apart at f/5.6 then combined in Photomatix applying Tone Compressor, opened in PSCS3 adjusted levels for Highlight & Shadow - Selective Color - Contrast & Brightness - merged then applied Smart Sharpen to finished image and converted Profile from Adobe RGB to sRGB for the web. ![]()

Here are a couple of hand held HDRs:
![]() ![]() One of the main reasons that I bought the 1D Mark III was the ability to shoot handheld HDRs, the 10 FPS definitely helps keep camera movement between shots to a minimum.

It's funny how people keep insisting a tripod IS A MUST for HDR shots after so many samples posted here which prove clearly that it's not.
Sydor: great shots! Mark_Cohran: when you've trespassed in an abandoned structure, hotel or factory, TRUST ME, THERE'S NO TIME to set-up a tripod, moreover carry it! (that's just an example where a tripod would complicate things, I can think of more if you think it's needed to convince you it's not true what you've said) Not EVERYBODY is shooting flowers and landscapes What do you say about moving subjects? Let's see some (preudo)HDRs from one RAW file! (I'll try to dig some up once I get home) - I can guarantee you 95% of viewers will not be able to spot the difference! ![]()

Personally, if I wanted to create a hdr... I would prefer to use a tripod and shot 5-7 frames, purely because I know that I would get better results than the 3 bracketed frames from my 5D while hand holding.

It all depends on the specific situation. Of course that if you need a 30sec exposure to get one shot, handholding is out of the question. But as we discused on the fist page of the thread, if the longest exposure can be obtained in good, sharp conditions, with 5fps available you can get very good results. Could it be better on a tripod? We expect an example from you to SHOW what "BETTER" means. I doubt it.
Maybe you're trying to say that some may not be able to handhold and get good alignable brakets. But that does not mean that NO ONE is! Or maybe, what I am saying is that in some cases, the quality difference between handheld brakets and tripod once is not worth carrying the damn thing after you. It's tricky. It has saved me plenty of times, but I have brought it with me in whole trips and not used it for one shot. And it's pretty frustrating coz' it's not quite light. ![]() PS: how's this one?

i think it's fair to say that a tripod certainly couldn't hurt....but i think it's also fair to say, considering there have been so many great HDRs posted that are handheld successfully, that's it's also quite possible to do some handheld.
doesn't always work...but certainly can relatively often as long as you can stay pretty steady. whenever i try a handheld sequence i take the shots twice...just to be sure that one of the two sets I don't stray dramatically through the sequence.

I don't think it's "use a tripod or die!" as it's more of getting the longer exposures required handheld... This is where IS helps. Of course using a tripod should give better results. But that's not always possible or practical.
