Default NEED INFO: Image Stabilization

I enjoy the following types of photography:
-Family & Friends
-Outdoor scenery
-Baseball
-Car & motorcycle racing
- Air shows and airborne aircraft

I'm currently on a quest for maximum sharpness in my photos. I've noticed that as I upgrade my camera equipment (camera body and lens) that it's becoming lighter. Since I don't use a tripod very often I've noticed an increase in camera shake. Will Image Stabilization be of any real value in this type of photography?

In the past the rule was to use a shutter speed at least equal to the focal length of your lens...and doing that has never been a problem.

Thanks - Wayne.
